Happy 176th Birthday to Mark Twain
Born November 30, 1835
Writer & humorist Mark Twain is born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in the small town of Florida, Missouri. (He will be raised in Hannibal, Missouri.) Walt Disney admired Twain's writing and so the famous author's name and image can be found scattered throughout Disney theme parks all over the world.
Tom Sawyer Island - based on Twain's classic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer - is the only Disneyland attraction that Walt personally designed!
Disneyland also features the Mark Twain Riverboat, which takes guests on a 12-minute journey around the Rivers of America.
Both Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland have versions of the Mark Twain Riverboat as well.
In Florida, Mr. Twain appears in Epcot's Audio-Animatronic stage show The American Adventure, and the Magic Kingdom features a version of Tom Sawyer Island (located in Frontierland).
Disney's 1990 animated The Prince and the Pauper is loosely based on Twain's classic novel The Prince and the Pauper, first published in 1881.
In 1991 The Disney Channel aired the Disney Channel Premiere Film Mark Twain and Me, about a young girl who befriends the famous writer.

Mickey Pretzel
"You can only find them one place: in Frontierland in the Magic Kingdom at Frontierland Pretzel Wagon between the Diamond Horseshoe and Pecos Bill Cafe (next to the turkey leg cart). Pair the twist with cheese and chocolate dipping sauces. Insiders tell us it’s still in “testing phase” at Walt Disney World Resort, but we bet it’s here to stay.You also can find it at Disneyland park at Refreshment Corner, Bengal Barbecue, Frontierland Pretzel, Small World Pretzel and Tomorrowland Pretzel. At Disney California Adventure Park, they are sold at Bayside Brews, the Beer Truck and Hollywood Pretzel."

Giant Disney Sleeping Beauty Sand Castle Created in Paris
For the first time, Disneyland Paris is participating in Paris Plages. This is a 16-foot sand sculpture of Sleeping Beauty Castle.Paris Plages is a yearly summer event held in the heart of Paris where the Seine riverbanks are transformed into a giant beach.
Seven expert sculptors worked for nearly 300 hours to transform 60 tons of natural sand into our famous castle along the Seine River. Take a look at their finished work [Click to Enlarge]:

Haunted Mansion Opens at Disneyland
It was on this day in 1969 that Haunted Mansion, one of the most beloved attractions at Disneyland, finally opened its creaking doors. Construction on the Mansion had begun seven years before, but work ceased on the project when Walt and his Imagineers were forced to turn their attentions to the 1964 World’s Fair. After that, years were spent devising exactly what would go inside the creepy house on the edge of New Orleans Square. Originally, it was conceived that Haunted Mansion would be a walk-through attraction, but with the arrival of the Omnimover transportation system, Imagineers settled on “doom buggies” as a solution. Disney Legend Paul Frees, who provides narration as guests are whisked through the spooky attraction, also voiced narration for the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction and was the voice of Ludwig Von Drake.

Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant

The castle, which was finished in August 1991 (20 years ago last week), is a bit different than the first Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland, California. The French version features pink-tinted turrets, stained-glass windows and a basement cavern that is home to a dragon (La Tanière du Dragon), who awakens if you wait long enough.

Walt Disney at Café Orleans and Plaza Inn [1966]
Shortly after New Orleans Square opened in 1966, Walt posed for this photo with Cast Members at the Creole Café. Later renamed Café Orleans, you can still find delicious desserts, and of course, espresso there.
Nowadays, you can go to Café Orleans to see the very same espresso machine pictured with Walt after all these years.
These little connections to Walt Disney are always a special treat to discover at Disneyland park. Do you have a favorite place or item in the parks that especially reminds you of Walt?
